It was earlier this week that the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver depth chart took a hit. Veteran receiver DeVante Parker surprisingly retired mere months after signing with Philadelphia.

General manager Howie Roseman continues to look for depth behind the star duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, both of whom signed long-term contract extensions earlier in the offseason.

Enter into the equation a name you likely have not heard in eons. Out of the blue, Philadelphia announced on Thursday that it has signed former Cincinnati Bengals first-round bust John Ross to a one-year contract.

Ross, 28, last suited up for the New York Giants back in 2021. The former No. 9 overall pick from Washington recently announced his decision to unretire and seek a return to the NFL. After a workout with the Eagles, he’s now landed on a Super Bowl contender.

Seen as a deep threat heading into the 2017 NFL Draft, injuries marred Ross’ NFL career. He put up just 62 receptions for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns in 37 games over five seasons.

Ross’ best performance came back in 2019 with Cincinnati when he recorded 28 catches for 506 yards. He’ll now have an opportunity to earn a roster spot in training camp.
