PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two Philadelphia officers are on administrative leave after shooting at a man while responding to a domestic dispute Saturday.

Officials say around 1 a.m. a 23-year-old woman was inside her apartment on E. Cliveden Street in Germantown with a friend and a 23-year-old man.

An argument broke out between the two 23-year-olds and the woman asked the man to leave.

He later returned through a window, grabbed the woman by her arm, and took her into the bedroom where they continued to argue.

Officials say the subject of the argument, a 26-year-old man, later came to the complex and knocked on the front door.

The 23-year-old man then grabbed a hammer and went to confront him.

Officers responded to call for a person with a gun at the apartment building and, upon arrival, found the 26-year-old at the front door asking the 23-year-old to come outside.

He was then heard saying, "Oh, you have a hammer," before moving away from the entrance.

The 23-year-old then came to the front door and left the building holding and pointing what police believed to be a firearm. That’s when both officers fired their guns. As they backed away, the 23-year-old went inside the building.

A barricade was declared and police requested the SWAT team.

The 23-year-old surrendered and was taken into custody then brought to a nearby hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds to both arms.

Police recovered a hammer from the scene.

The 23-year-old is pending charges and the discharging officers have been placed on administrative duty.
