Woman, 21, killed by 'drunk' driver driving wrong way down on I-95 in Philadelphia

A young woman has been killed on Interstate 95 North in Philadelphia after a driver allegedly got behind the wheel after drinking alcohol and drove on the wrong side of the road .

The incident took place shortly after 2.30am on Sunday between exits for the Walt Whitman Bridge and Columbus Boulevard.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers were called to the scene for reports of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, according to 6ABC.

While rushing to the scene, troopers say the wrong-way vehicle hit another car traveling northbound head-on. The driver of the northbound car, a 21-year-old woman, died as a result of the crash .

Police say the 44-year-old wrong-way driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol . He was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash, the extent of which are not yet known.

Charges are being prepared by state police . Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved in the collision. I-95 North was shut down for several hours as a result of the crash and reopened around 8am.
