A former Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant was sentenced in connection with an overtime scheme dating back to 2015 .

According to the Department of Justice in Boston , Daniel J Griffin, 60, of Belmont Massachusetts , conspired to steal thousands of dollars in federally funded overtime by regularly arriving late to and leaving early from overtime shifts funded by grants intended to improve traffic safety.

At the time that he was collecting the fraudulent payments from the Massachusetts State Police, Griffin was reportedly running his other company, Knight Protection Services, which earned $2 million from 2012 to 2019.

He concealed over $700,000 from the IRS and used the funds for personal expenses.

During the initial investigation back in 2017 and 2018, it was alleged that Griffin told State Troopers to cover up the fraudulent activity and ordered records to be destroyed. He was convicted in December 2023 and faced charges of conspiracy, theft concerning a federal program and wire fraud. He had previously admitted to additional counts of wire fraud and filing false tax returns, as well as defrauding the private school his children attended by hiding income and submitting misleading applications for financial aid.

Last Friday, Griffin was sentenced to five years in prison and three years of supervised release. He is also required to pay $329,163 in restitution, a $176,700 and $2,100 special assessment.

Griffin’s co-conspirator William W Robertson was also convicted and awaits sentencing.
