Broome County housing advocates skeptical of city’s proposal to address homelessness they say falls short

Binghamton housing advocates say they’re skeptical of a new initiative in the city aimed at ending street homelessness and encampments. Mayor Jared Kraham said the city will contract with Catholic Charities of Broome County to fund housing subsidies for people living in the encampments. Street outreach teams will go to each encampment to move people into homes, according to a press release from Kraham’s office.

Residents turn out in strong numbers to vote across Chemung County

It wasn't a presidential election year, but that didn't stop Chemung County voters from turning out in large numbers Tuesday, Nov. 3 to cast their ballot in the general election . In addition to contested races for governor, attorney general and other state positions, voters also had to decide who would lead county government for the next four years, with choices for county executive and several legislative seats. Even in smaller communities across the county, turnout was strong, even though off year elections typically don't attract as much voter interest. At the Chemung Fire Department, 291 residents had cast their ballots by noon, which was much heavier than usual, poll workers said. At the Village of Wellsburg/Town of Ashland Municipal Building, the parking lot was full at 2 p.m. and cars were lined up down the street as residents waited their turn to fill out their ballots. Voting at Elmira High School was busier than the last 10 years, election inspectors said. For some residents, exercising their right to vote was a rejection of the status quo. New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced the appointment of former Civil Rights Unit Chief for the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York Jacqueline Kelly as outside counsel to lead a fair and comprehensive criminal investigation into an alleged sexual assault on Cornell University’s campus in October 2024. Adam Weitsman plans new restaurant at former Metro's in Tioga County

On a late October day, the former Metro's Restaurant and Bar just outside Owego stands empty, engulfed by a backdrop of seemingly endless red, yellow and orange leaves that mark a classic Southern Tier fall. The restaurant on state Route 96, which closed in 2025, had been a mainstay for decades. For one local resident, seeing the empty eatery — a landmark of his childhood — languish was unacceptable. In September, Adam Weitsman, owner of Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling, acquired the property, and he plans to bring the location back to life with a new restaurant. The cuisine will change — Weitsman said the new restaurant likely won't serve Italian fare — but the site's iconic mini golf course will be renovated and reopened to the public.
