Athlete of the Week: Luke Jeremy of Clay High School
OREGON, Ohio — A basketball player in the winter and baseball player in the spring, Clay High School's Luke Jeremy is known for his versatility. In fact, Clay baseball head coach Jim Phillips said Jeremy does not have one set position and plays wherever he is needed in the infield.
Hoover is now Gibsonburg's strikeout king
Every strikeout for the rest of Nolan Hoover's high school career builds on Gibsonburg's program record. Hoover is a junior. He struck out nine Wednesday in a 5-1 setback to New Riegel in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division. He surpassed 1990 graduate Scott Widmer (293) and finished with 295 career strikeouts. Clay baseball wins 12th straight, tops Bowling Green 8-2
The Clay Eagles provided further evidence that they are arguably the area's top baseball team on Tuesday, completing a two-game sweep of visiting Northern Lakes League Cardinal Division foe Bowling Green. Senior first baseman Luke Jeremy, the Eagles' No. 9 batter in the lineup, belted a pair of near carbon-copy two-run homers down the left-field line to highlight Clay's 8-2 win over the Bobcats. “Luke Jeremy has been really good for us all year out of the nine hole,” Clay head coach Jim Phillips said. “He's that prototypical senior who is super relaxed and doesn't try to do too much. He's been a real bright spot for us.” The Eagles (14-1, 1-0 NLL), who won their 12th straight game, won 16-4 at BG on Monday night.
Toledo softball rebuild appears ahead of schedule
Bryan Blair has hired enough head coaches at the University of Toledo for a profile to emerge. At the top of the list is head coaching experience. Ironically, the outlier was his first hire as Toledo’s athletic director — softball coach Jessica Bracamonte. The learning curve has proven to be shallow. In the final season under previous coach Joe Abraham, Toledo cratered to 12-37 overall and 5-21 in the Mid-American Conference. A step-by-step rebuild was expected under Bracamonte, who came to UT after three years as an assistant at powerhouse Duke and six at Central Michigan. Instead, she got it all back in Year 1. The Rockets were 21-25 overall and 14-14 in the MAC with an almost identical roster from the previous season. This year is even better, with UT (22-21, 12-10) rising as high as second in the conference. On Tuesday, Toledo got an up-close look at what being the best entails.
Power conference transfers looking to make impact for BGSU men's basketball
BOWLING GREEN — The turnaround for Bowling Green State University’s men’s basketball team in its first year under Todd Simon was noticeable across the college hoops world. The area where it may end up being the most beneficial could be in recruiting. “That was a big factor. Obviously, I wanted to go to a program that wants to win and a program that plays winning basketball,” said former Michigan forward Youssef Khayat, one of two recent power conference transfers to sign with BGSU. “That was one of the major things I wanted to do, and [go to] a place where there’s a system where I can go and help the team win.” Khayat, along with former Arizona State guard Braelon Green, were the first two players to commit to BGSU via the transfer portal since the end of the 2023-24 season when the Falcons were one of just 10 teams in the country to go from 20 losses in 2022-23 to 20 wins.
Early outburst lifts Mud Hens at Columbus
COLUMBUS — A four-run second inning helped the Toledo Mud Hens defeat the Columbus Clippers 7-3 on Thursday at Huntington Park. Toledo (17-13) posted its first victory in the six-game series after dropping the first two contests to Columbus (12-17). After scoring a run in the top of the first when Akil Baddoo crossed home plate on Buddy Kennedy’s sacrifice fly, the Mud Hens built a cushion in the second. Ryan Vilade scored on a Jhonkensy Noel throwing error, Baddoo singled home Justice Bigbie, and a Justyn-Henry Malloy double drove in Baddoo and Riley Unroe. Columbus clawed two runs back in the bottom of the second on a Noel home run and a fielder’s choice double play on which Micah Pries scored. But Toledo’s Bligh Madris connected on his third home run of the season in the third, a solo shot, and a Jace Jung single in the fourth drove Anthony Bemboom home to increase the Mud Hens’ lead to 7-2.
