Welaunee Arch plan could bring 6,591 homes. Neighbors want more time
A growing number of residents want to slow down the permit approval process for a massive proposed zoning change that would create a city within the city in northeast Tallahassee. It involves land within the Welaunee Plantation property. The proposal consists of an amendment to the Conceptual Planned Unit Development (PUD) for 1,227 acres east of Centerville Road, west of Miccosukee Road and north of Interstate 10 in the Critical Planning Area zoning district. If approved, it would allow the construction of a town center, village center and neighborhood and residential zones within what's called the Welaunee Arch Phase I. The change could also greenlight the construction of up to 6,591 new homes and 425,000 square feet of commercial space and other non-residential areas. In a records request, the Tallahassee Democrat obtained dozens of emails leading up to the Sept. 14 Development Review Committee meeting, which resulted in unanimous conditional approval for the proposed amendment to move forward for the Welaunee Arch Phase I discussion. Records show most residents urged the committee to postpone making a decision, adding not enough time was given to digest the magnitude of the large-scale zoning amendment. Emails show major concerns over Welaunee Arch Phase

This $9.6 Million Florida Estate Has Its Own Baseball Field
On a quiet stretch of Old St. Augustine Road outside Tallahassee, a 100-acre Florida estate has spent decades avoiding the usual fate of large parcels near a growing city. Retired Navy captain Albert Gallatin Neal bought the land in 1960, dug its ponds and planted more than 4,000 trees. After his death, developers repeatedly approached his widow, Margaret, but she turned them down. She wanted the property to stay in family hands or with people who wanted to keep the acreage intact. In 2003, she found the right buyers in David and René Hanselman, who raised their four children here. Freddie Mercury Wrote Some of Queen's Biggest Hits on This Yamaha Piano. Now It Can Be Yours. The grounds begin to distinguish the property before you even reach the custom residence. Spring-fed ponds stocked with bass, a cypress duck pond, wooded acreage for deer and wild bobwhite quail, orchards, gardens, and a swimming pool spread across the grounds. There’s also a full-size baseball field, complete with lights and a batting cage. That personal connection extends to the 6,000-square-foot house. René designed the molding, doors, and cabinetry with architect Ken Pieper, working from more than 20 pages of custom millwork plans.
