West Virginia’s Blennerhassett Island opening late due to flooding

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The season opening of Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park has been pushed back for flooding cleanup.

The park was originally scheduled to open on April 30, but high water at the beginning of April washed debris onto the island, eroded some roadways and flooded some buildings, according to a press release from West Virginia State Parks.

The release said that the Blennerhassett Mansion and its artifacts were not affected, but the park opening is now scheduled for Monday, May 6 so that crews can clean up and complete some reconstructions.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused and look forward to hosting you this season at Blennerhassett Island State Park,” park superintendent Craig Pyles said in the release.

Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is on the Ohio River near Parkersburg and only accessible by boat. Upon opening, tickets for the boat trip to the island are $12 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets for additional activities like tours of the mansion and horse wagon rides are also available.
