Batesville, Panola County: Ancient Mounds, Railroads, and the Fight for Civil Rights
Appalachian Community Histories – Batesville, Panola County: Ancient Mounds, Railroads, and the Fight for Civil Rights. In the heart of Panola County, Mississippi, the city of Batesville developed from a small railroad settlement into one of northern Mississippi’s important centers of commerce, government, and community life. Its history stretches far beyond the arrival of the railroad in the nineteenth century, reaching back to Native American communities that occupied the surrounding landscape nearly two thousand years ago. Over the generations, the area witnessed the displacement of the Chickasaw people, the decline of once-prosperous river settlements, the upheaval of the Civil War, the expansion of agriculture and industry, and the long struggle for African American civil rights.

Winona, Montgomery County: Railroads, Cotton Mills, Fires, and Fannie Lou Hamer
Appalachian Community Histories – Winona, Montgomery County: Railroads, Cotton Mills, Fires, and Fannie Lou Hamer. In the rolling hills of north-central Mississippi, the city of Winona grew from a railroad settlement into one of the region’s important commercial and political centers. Long before automobiles and interstate highways reshaped travel across the state, trains brought merchants, farmers, laborers, and visitors through a town whose streets, hotels, and businesses developed around the railroad tracks. Its position between the Mississippi Delta and the eastern portion of the state helped establish Winona as a trading center, while its selection as the county seat of Montgomery County in 1871 gave the growing community an importance that extended beyond transportation.
