Nineteen Hawaii cats relocated to San Diego after Hurricane Lowell
Nineteen cats from Kaua‘i Humane Society have been relocated after Hurricane Lowell to provide vital relief to the Hawaiian shelter as it continues its emergency recovery efforts. By taking in cats already awaiting adoption in Kaua‘i, the partnership frees up critical kennel space for displaced and injured family pets affected by the storm. The first group of 19 cats touched down on the evening of Oct. 13 and was transported to Humane Society campuses in Escondido and Oceanside. The cats are settling in well, with 11 staying in Escondido and eight in Oceanside. Staff say they have been social and outgoing as they adjust to their new surroundings. Once they're ready, the cats will be available for adoption. Adoptions are completed in person on a first-come, first-served basis, and holds cannot be placed over the phone. A second transport of 20 cats is scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks, bringing the total number of relocated Hawaiian cats to 39. While the organization is navigating its 13th consecutive month of record-high adult dog populations and operating at 164% canine capacity, feline capacity is at 86%, allowing it to answer the call for emergency assistance without compromising local care.
