Crews were busy delivering and spreading tons of sand Tuesday at Tobay Beach.

As News 12 has reported, a sand replenishment project started there a couple of weeks ago in an effort to save the summer season at the beach.

The dunes were nearly wiped out by a series of storms. The shoreline was damaged, too.

The job is expected to go on for around 2 ½ weeks. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says the beach will be ready for Memorial Day.

"We were horrified when we woke up one day and the beach was gone," Saladino says. "But we've put on a full court press, 50 pieces of equipment, we're bringing in 38,000 tons of sand and I can assure everyone that come Memorial Day weekend, there will be a gorgeous beach for them to enjoy all summer long."

The ocean side of the beach remains closed until the work is all done.

Town officials say they have had to do similar replenishment project in recent years and are hoping the federal government can figure out a long-term fix in the near future.
