J.M. Smucker Co. laying off about two dozen employees

A small number of layoffs is coming to The J.M. Smucker Company in Orrville, officials confirmed.

The 127-year-old company recently told the Beacon Journal approximately two dozen employees will be laid off as part of an organizational restructuring.

"We recently coordinated an organizational evaluation with a focus on bringing related functions closer together to enhance efficiency and collaboration," Frank Cirillo, Smucker's senior manager of corporate communications, said in an email. "Please know that any decision that impacts our employees is made only after careful consideration. Those employees who will be exiting the Company will be fully supported as they transition."

The company, led by CEO Mark Smucker, employs nearly 6,000 in its corporate offices, headquarters and manufacturing plants across America.

In November, the company announced the completion of its sale of Sahale Snacks to Second Nature Brands, and in the company in January announced the completion of its sale of Bick’s pickles, Habitant pickled beets, Woodman’s horseradish and McLarens pickled onions to TreeHouse Foods.

Smucker's net coffee sales decreased 1% in the third financial quarter, which ended January 31.

The company’s third-quarter operating income increased $100 million year-over-year, but its net interest expense increased $62 million over the same time, according to its earning statements for the two periods.

Shares of Smucker (SJM) have hovered around $110 this week on the New York Stock Exchange.

Smucker’s fiscal year ends April 30., putting the company on track to release is next quarterly earnings report around early June.
