(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After Tuesday's stormy weather, homeowners in suburban Orland Park have been warned about potential repair scams.

Orland Park leaders warned that a number of people have been going door-to-door claiming to be contractors who can repair roofs damaged by hail.

Residents of the southwest suburb were urged to make sure contractors are licensed and qualified to do the work to reduce the risk of scams, fraud or substandard repairs.

One way is to check with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to see if a contractor is licensed by the state.

Many communities also offer lists of licensed contractors, and some — including Orland Park — require contractors to get permits before they can solicit business door-to-door.
