A shooting at a South Georgia after-prom occurred over the weekend and left a 15-year-old cheerleader dead and three others injured.
Paulk was shot in her right side and was quickly transported to the hospital where she tragically passed away. Three other students were also injured in the incident. One student sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was discharged from the hospital on Monday, currently recuperating at home.
Another 14-year-old student was taken to a Macon hospital for surgery on his arm, the site of his injury. The 19-year-old victim has been discharged from the hospital. As of now, 17-year-old Channen Brown is facing murder charges in connection to the shooting. However, authorities have indicated that there was another individual involved in the shooting at the party, and efforts are ongoing to identify this additional suspect.
Paulk, a freshman honor roll student at Irwin County High School, was known for her love of cheerleading and fashion. According to her mother, just two weeks prior to the tragic incident, Paulk had expressed a newfound interest in pursuing a career in radiology. “Everybody just loved her. She was like a light and when she walked in the room, you knew she was there,” she said. “Chyell forever 15 and I’m going to stand tall and stand strong to get justice for my baby.” Linda King, Chyell’s aunt, also said they will continue to fight for justice. “The light that Chyell had, was just a very bright light. So as far I’m concerned, Chyell your light is still shining, and your aunt is going to do all she can to make sure that justice is served,” she said.
School Principal Jared Luke released a statement about Paulk’s passing. The loss of Chyell is extremely saddening and tragic. She had a loving spirit and always had a smile on her face.
Chyell excelled academically in the classroom and was also a member of the basketball cheerleading squad. Our school will continue to have extra counselors on campus in the coming days. Please continue to keep Chyell’s family, as well as her school family, in your thoughts and prayers.
