Small Wisconsin school district to dissolve after voters reject referendum

(The Center Square) – The Hustisford School District, in eastern Wisconsin, is going away. Wisconsin’s School District Boundary Appeal Board on voted to dissolve the district. It is the first time since 1990 board agreed to close a school district. Hustisford has just 238 students in the entire district and has been losing students for years. The school district asked voters for a $4 million referendum in April, but it failed. Quickly after the election, Hustisford Schools then began the process of shutting down. The vote was the final step. Wisconsin's state superintendent blamed a lack of money, and how the entire state of Wisconsin pays for schools for the shutdown. "The Hustisford School District is a casualty of decades of an antiquated, broken school funding formula that has failed to keep pace with the costs of educating our children," State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said in a statement. But Hustisford Schools were spending about the state's average per student. Budget numbers show Hustisford's budget was more than $6 million per year and show that the school spends about $22,000 per student. WAUPUN – A common sentiment in Waupun's dining scene is that the city has been lucky with pizza restaurants. Martha and Jim Hopp opened Hopp's Restaurant on Fond du Lac Street in 1965, quickly finding the means in 1969 to move to its longtime West Main Street location, where Main Street Bistro & Bakery stands today. The decades-old effort to identify a woman whose skull was found at the bottom of the Wolf River in Winneconne has taken a step forward through investigative genetic genealogy . Investigators believe the woman's grandmother was Mary Jane Connor, who represents the closest familial connection they have established to "Wolf River Joanne Doe." "It's statistically probable that she's the grandmother," Lt. Chris Braman of the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office told The Post-Crescent, "but we don't know what sex her child was who would be the parent of our victim." Braman said the probability stems from genealogy-based DNA testing recently completed in Northern Ireland. Wisconsin trooper released from ICE custody after 'dramatic experience'

A 21-year-old South African-born Wisconsin State Patrol trooper who was detained Nov. 5 by federal immigration agents was released from custody Nov. 6, according to his attorney. Attorney Marc Christopher confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Carel Aaron Van Der Merwe, who was traveling to visit family with a valid work permit, had been released from the Dodge County Jail and was awaiting a ride from his supervisor, the head trooper in Tomah. Christopher said Van Der Merwe was released under an order of supervision, which requires him to periodically check in with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He will also likely be subject to electronic monitoring, potentially through an application on his cellphone rather than an ankle bracelet. Christopher said he plans to speak with Van Der Merwe to discuss the next steps in his case. He expects Van Der Merwe will eventually share his experience publicly but wants to give him time to readjust following his release. "I just told him I wanted him to get back, get reacclimated, just get settled, because I know he's gone through a very dramatic experience," Christopher said.
