Junction City parking update ends move-a-few-inches loophole
An update to Junction City's parking ordinance aims to eliminate a loophole city residents and visitors have been using for decades. It was already illegal to leave a vehicle parked on the city's streets for more than 72 hours at a time, but now vehicles will have to move at least two city blocks. During a recent Junction City Council meeting, the parking ordinance was updated for the first time since it was enacted in the 1980s, according to Junction City Police Chief Mark Waddell. The current ordinance, found in Chapter 10.05 of the Junction City Municipal Code , states a vehicle cannot be parked for more than 72 continuous hours on any city street. A Junction City Council agenda states residents regularly complain about people who use this loophole. The volume of complaints caused the police department to become concerned with how many people are storing vehicles on roads. Waddell says the city's streets became recreational vehicle storage for some locals who leave their boats, trailers, old cars, motorcycles, bicycles and even lawnmowers on Junction City's roadways. Some people lived out of RVs permanently, moving their vehicle a few inches each day to avoid citations, or would not pay
