Man shot in North Toledo hospitalized
A Toledo man with multiple gunshot wounds was found lying in the 3700 block of North Erie Street at 11 p.m. Monday. Andrew Black, 34, was transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center and is expected to survive. Anyone with information is asked to call or text the Crime Stopper program at 419-255-1111. Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.

Anonymous contractor steps up to rebuild deck for disabled veteran after Call 11 for Action report
TOLEDO, Ohio — A disabled U.S. Navy veteran from Toledo can now enjoy a new deck after contacting Call 11 for Action to get help with her situation. In March, Kallie Morris, 44, told Call 11 for Action that the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) installed new railings on her deck in 2023, but those railings were nailed onto an existing, collapsing deck.
Construction to close South Toledo street for 45 days
A water line and roadway reconstruction project will close a South Toledo residential street for about 45 days starting Monday, the Toledo Department of Transportation announced. Mapleway Drive will be closed between Sherwood Avenue and Wildwood Boulevard, with access maintained for local traffic. No detour route will be posted. Similar work that started last week on Woodland Avenue between Smead and Brown avenues in central Toledo is scheduled for mid-July completion.
Fired UToledo football coach seeks $10 million in discrimination lawsuit
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A former coach for the University of Toledo football team is suing the school for $10 million, claiming age and race discrimination. Craig Kuligowski served as the defensive line coach in the 2022 and 2023 season, but was dismissed from the team prior to their bowl game in December of last year, and subsequently fired.
Parts of two streets to close temporarily
Separate projects will close parts of two streets Wednesday, the Toledo Department of Transportation said. Railroad crossing repairs will close Benore Road to through traffic between Stickney and Detroit avenues for three days, with traffic detoured via Alexis Road and Detroit. Utility work, meanwhile, will close southbound Franklin Avenue at Bancroft Street on Wednesday only. No detour route will be posted.

A proposal on Toledo Council’s agenda Wednesday would allocate $50,000 of the city’s general funds to creating a health-care model for gay and transgender people. The goal of the legislation appears to be to establish a process to grant a stamp of approval for which local health-care providers could qualify to indicate they are welcoming to gay and transgender patients. Former Tate Funeral Home in North Toledo to be demolished
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A former Toledo funeral home with a long, sorted history will be coming down this summer. Most recently it was called the Tate Funeral Home, located on Lagrange Street. It closed for good after remains were found improperly stored and now the building is an eyesore.
Maumee residents unhappy with expected water, sewage rates increase
MAUMEE, Ohio — Expected increases to Maumee's water and sewage rates were a hot-button topic at Monday's city council meeting. If Ordinance 15-2024 passes, Maumee residents will see increases throughout the next five years. The current water rate of $12.90 is set to increase to $13.36 per 1,000 gallons of water in July.
Local police departments to receive state funding to reduce violent crime
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Two local police departments are receiving funding from a grant through the Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program. Governor DeWine announced on May 21 that the $1.6 million grant will be used to help local law enforcement agencies implement violent crime reduction strategies in their communities.

Division III and IV softball: Oak Harbor to face former league foe in regional semifinal
Three Toledo-area high school softball teams will be chasing regionals in Division III and Division IV this week. In Division III, sixth-ranked NBC champion Oak Harbor (24-2, 11-1) looks to earn its second trip to the state final four in three years after reaching the D-II semifinals in 2022. The Rockets of second-year coach Cami Haas face former longtime Sandusky Bay Conference foe Margaretta (19-10) in Wednesday's 5 p.m. semifinal at Findlay High School. Two area teams have qualified for regionals in Division IV, with Buckeye Border Conference runner-up Montpelier (17-7, 7-1) facing Monroeville in the 5 p.m. semifinal at Rossford, and SBC River Division member Fremont St. Joseph (12-13) facing eighth-ranked Vienna Mathews in a 2 p.m. semifinal at Berea.
Toledo event planner facing felony theft charges
TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo event planner is facing felony charges after allegedly taking payments for a banquet hall she no longer had access to. WTOL 11's TaTiana Cash spoke with three people last week who claimed Alicia Owens - owner of Over The Top Occasions LLC - took money from them for events and services that were not as described, or not present at all. This included Shirreatha Porter, who claimed she paid Owens for the use of a banquet hall for an event, but could not access it the day of.

Anthony Wayne superintendent taking top job at Oregon schools
The Anthony Wayne schools’ superintendent will leave his post July 31 to take the same post in Oregon. Jim Fritz announced the move Monday morning in an email to Anthony Wayne staff. “After 21 years of service as an administrator and the last 14 as superintendent, leaving this district was not an easy decision for me,” he said. “However, I am excited about the new opportunities that lie ahead and the chance to continue making a positive impact on the lives of students in this area.” The agenda for an Oregon Board of Education meeting Tuesday includes a “transition agreement” effective Aug. 1 to Sept. 27 for Superintendent Hal Gregory. Mr. Gregory has been superintendent since April, 2015, when he was moved up from assistant superintendent to fill the vacancy created by Superintendent Lonny Rivera’s departure.
30 Early College students set to receive 2nd diploma
For 30 students graduating Tuesday from Toledo Early College High School, accepting a high school diploma is somewhat of a deja vu experience. For them, that diploma comes several weeks after they received associate degrees from the University of Toledo. The early-college school located in the former UT Driscoll Center offers a college-preparatory program that focuses on the liberal arts. Students take up to two years of English, up to four years of mathematics and science, two years of social studies, and two years of a foreign language at the high school level.
