NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ —Stony Brook School is among 73 schools certified as National Schools of Character by Character.org, a national advocate and leader for character. Out of this esteemed group, Stony Brook School stands as one of only 20 New Jersey schools to achieve this honor.

“We are pleased to announce and celebrate the schools that have earned this national recognition,” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, President of Character.org. “Each of these schools has put in place a comprehensive approach to help students understand, care about, and consistently practice the character strengths that will help them flourish in school, in relationships, in the workplace, and as citizens.”

Since its inception, the National Schools of Character program has impacted over three million students, staff, parents, and community members. The schools and districts that apply must meet the rigorous standards articulated in Character.org’s 11 Principles Framework for Schools: A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character. Each school is assessed by a team of trained evaluators.

Some of the work that went into Stony Brook School receiving the School of Character award include:

    • Participated in a day-long virtual interview process where students, staff members, and parents met with Character.org judges to reveal Stony Brook’s character development journey.

    • Explained their building-wide core value system and how students are taught those values

    • Demonstrating how they create opportunities for their families to connect with the school community

    • Exhibiting how their character education work impacts their student achievement

Additionally, Ms. Ines Simoes and Principal Valentina Carleo were selected to present Stony Brook’s character education program at the NJASED Conference at Rider University. The presentation highlighted the work that got the school selected as a National School of Character that included transforming the culture into one of “prevention” versus “reaction”.

“I am thrilled and honored that Stony Brook School has been certified as a National School of Character,” remarked Valentina Carleo, Stony Brook School Principal. “This recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our school community in reinforcing the core values of C.A.R.D. I’d like to thank the staff and our entire school community for putting in the daily work shaping our students’ character education. This award exemplifies a team effort!”
