Ririe Reservoir freezes over — almost
Last Friday afternoon, Jan. 23, I received a message containing five photos of ice forming on Ririe Reservoir. They came from Bob Johnstone, manager of the Juniper RV Park near the dam. By Sunday, there were still some open pockets of water straight out from the boat ramp. I drove over to the reservoir on Monday, walked along the edge of the ice, drilled some holes, and found the ice was about 2 inches thick. It appeared the thick fog over the weekend had covered the solid ice with about an inch of snow, insulating it so the 6-degree temperatures (Fahrenheit) could not rebuild the ice quickly....

Family revives 1960s Yellowstone theater for a new era of live entertainment
WEST YELLOWSTONE, Montana — A historic theater space with deep local roots is being brought back to life as a new generation prepares to reopen it this summer. The Yellowstone Westgate Theater, located at 29 Madison Avenue in West Yellowstone, Montana, is scheduled to open June 4 following a full refurbishment. The reopening marks a full-circle moment for the Benson family, whose patriarch, Lynn Benson, and his colleagues at Ricks College launched a theater in the very same building in the early 1960s. “My grandfather and some other partners he taught with at Ricks College started a theater th...

Local high school grad's son to star in 'Stand Out' movie
The son of a 2007 Madison High School graduate will appear for a few moments in the upcoming T.C. Christensen film “Stand Out” to be released Jan. 23 in Rexburg. Anneli Wilcox Fielding and her husband Jordan Fielding’s son, Colton Fielding, 6, plays the younger version of Ben Kjar, who also experiences Crouzon Syndrome. The movie details the struggles of Ben Kjar (Care) who suffered from Crouzon Syndrome, a rare craniofacial disorder. It shows how he managed to overcome the syndrome through wrestling that helped strengthen him physically, emotionally and mentally. According to a movie press release, doctors told Kjar’s parents their son would face numerous limitations while growing up. “Ben yearns for an ordinary life free from the harsh scrutiny he faces daily,” states a press release. “However, each experience of adversity, including relentless bullying and a series of painful surgeries, ignites a fire within him. Determined to succeed, he pushes himself relentlessly, breaking through physical, social, and even romantic barriers that once seemed insurmountable.” Colton also experiences Crouzon Syndrome. His grandparents are Rexburg residents Eileen and Terry Wilcox. After Anneli learned about Kjar, she contacted him, and the Fieldings and Kjar soon became good friends. About the same

The Candy Jar brings sweet revival to downtown Blackfoot
What began as a vision for revitalizing downtown Blackfoot has become a beloved community gathering place filled with fudge, handmade chocolates and hometown pride. Owned by Paul and Judy Loomis, The Candy Jar has grown into a local landmark just steps away from one of the city’s biggest attractions. The Candy Jar, located at 105 Northwest Main St., directly across from the Idaho Potato Museum, opened after Paul Loomis spent years working in public service in Blackfoot. While helping install murals and redesign Broadway Street to improve accessibility and parking, Loomis noticed a downtown building that wasn’t welcoming the roughly 65,000 visitors who come to the Potato Museum each year. After encouraging the former owners to rethink their business model, the building was eventually put up for sale. After waiting several months to see if anyone else would invest in the space, Paul discussed the idea with his wife, Judy. While she was initially hesitant, excitement from their children and grandchildren — especially the idea of a candy store — quickly changed her mind. The Loomises purchased the building in January 2019 and immediately began renovations, which took nearly 10 months to complete. The goal was not only to open

Local artist Tal Sampson continues to honor legacy of Chief Pocatello with new painting
FORT HALL — Nearly two decades after beginning a single painting, renowned local artist Tal Sampson presented a new limited-edition portrait honoring Chief Pocatello to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes on December 19. The painting is the result of artistic dedication through historical research and a special connection to the Chief Pocatello family. The oil painting is a third reproduction of an original work that began in 2006. The donated piece is one of only 25 artist proofs that will ever be produced. The original piece earned the President’s Award at Idaho State University and Sampson continued to refine it over the years. “I kept changing it, repainting it again and again,” Sampson said. “I always felt like I owed it to the story, to the Pocatello family, and to myself to paint it the way it was meant to be.” There are no known photographs of Chief Pocatello in existence, so Sampson relied on historical research, written accounts, and the Pocatello family photographs to create a respectful representation. The painting portrays Chief Pocatello as a younger leader, at 30 years old, during what he described as a cultural “golden age,” a time when horse culture and buffalo hunting were central to
