    North Branch baseball earns big win over Princeton

    The North Branch baseball team began its week with a timely 3-2 upset win over an undefeated conference opponent in Princeton on Tuesday, April 23.

    The Vikings got a run on the board early in the bottom of the first inning, before the Tigers scored right back in the top of the second. However, North Branch was able to keep sending their base runners home, as the boys ran in a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning.

    Senior Noah Thorsen made pitches when it mattered most, recording seven strikeouts to help the Vikings maintain their lead.

    The undefeated Tigers were only able to score one more run, resulting with North Branch prevailing in the crucial victory.

    Following the big win, the Vikings played host to the Monticello Magic later in the week on Thursday, April 25. The squad found themselves up 2-1 heading into the third inning before the Magic’s bats got rolling en route to scoring three runs in back-to-back at bats.

    The Vikings were held scoreless the rest of the way, ultimately falling by a final score of 7-2.

    After a 1-1 split on the week, North Branch possesses a 4-5 record on the 2024 season.

    The North Branch softball team began its week by suffering a tough 6-4 loss to rival Chisago Lakes at home on Monday, April 22.

    The following day, the Vikings lost 7-4 to Mississippi 8 conference foe Princeton.

    On Thursday, April 25, the girls couldn’t keep up with Rock Ridge, as North Branch was defeated by a final score of 20-5.

    Following the three straight losses, the squad sits at a 2-8 record on the year.

    The North Branch boys tennis team lost a close matchup against the Anoka Tornadoes by a final score of 4-3 on Monday, April 22, falling just short of nabbing its second win of the season.

    The Vikings won two of the three singles matches, as freshman Wyatt Helberg and junior Drake Mellen defeated each of their opponents in two sets.

    On Tuesday, April 23, the boys lost to the Princeton Tigers by way of a 6-1 final. Helberg was the lone Viking to earn a win in the contest.

    On Thursday, April 25, North Branch lost to a powerhouse in Monticello in a 7-0 sweep.

    The Vikings are currently 1-10 on the year.

    Vikings track & field

    The North Branch track and field team’s sophomore Ella Dick was invited to compete in the prestigious Hamline Elite Meet on Friday, April 26.

    Dick saw action in the pole vault finals and placed third overall on a mark of 11-03.

    On Monday, April 22, the North Branch girls golf team went to Pebble Creek Golf Club for a Mississippi 8 Conference meet.

    As a team, the Vikings posted a final score of 410, good enough for a second-place finish behind Becker (359) and ahead of Big Lake (413) in third.

    Junior Ashley Bistodeau (89) and freshman Jenna Minke (98) finished third and eighth, respectively.

    On Monday, April 22, the North Branch boys golf team participated in a varsity conference meet at Monticello Country Club.

    The Vikings shot a 324 total as a team, good for a second-place finish behind both Monticello and Chisago Lakes, who tied for first at 310.

    Individually, North Branch’s freshman Carter Magnison was the top finisher for the team, earning a 78 to tied for sixth.

    Following Magnison was Nick Melvin (80) in sixth, Tyler Minke (81) in 14th, along with Drake Dimich (85) and Ian Smith (85) tying for 22nd.

    Cambridge-Isanti lost three of the four games it played last week. But that one win was a doozy.

    The Bluejackets buried Zimmerman 28-0 in a road game played Thursday, April 25.

    The week began with a 3-1 loss in a Mississippi 8 matchup at St. Francis, and the next day C-I dropped an 8-7 decision at Becker.

    Following the rout of the Thunder, Cambridge-Isanti fell at Elk River by a score of 9-0, giving them a season’s record of 1-7 overall and 1-5 in league action.

    The week began with a tough 12-2 loss at Becker on Tuesday, April 23. But C-I rebounded nicely to claim a pair of victories.

    Cambridge-Isanti knocked off Zimmerman 9-0 on Thursday, April 25. The Bluejackets scored three times in the first inning and never looked back, adding a pair of runs in the second, fourth and sixth.

    The next day the Bluejackets earned a 2-1 win against Section 7AAAA rival Blaine to even their season’s record to 5-5. C-I is 3-2 in Mississippi 8 action.

    Cambridge-Isanti began the week with a fifth-place finish in a Mississippi 8 Conference event played at Pebble Creek Golf Club on Monday, April 22.

    Amber Grecula tied for 11th place, leading the Bluejackets with a round of 103.

    Two days later C-I placed sixth in an event played at The Refuge Golf Club with a 452 team score. Hannah Westman’s 103 was the best score for a Bluejacket, tying her for 11th place, while Mia Kurowski shot a 109 to tie for 16th.

    On Friday, April 26 Cambridge-Isanti ranked seventh in an M8 meet held at Elk River Golf Club. For the third round in a row the Bluejackets had a top individual finisher, with Allie Nystrom tying for 15th with a round of 109.

    Cambridge-Isanti began the week with a ninth-place finish in a Mississippi 8 Conference meet hosted by Monticello Country Club on Monday, April 22. Tanner Jones fired an 88 to tie for 29th and lead the Bluejackets, while Josh Sauro tied for 33rd with a 91.

    Two days later C-I moved up to eighth in an M8 event played on the White Course at The Ponds. Jones again led the way, posting an 86 to tie for 26th, while Sauro’s round of 88 placed him 33rd.

    Cambridge-Isanti rolled to an easy victory at the Big Lake Invitational held Thursday, April 25.

    Senior twins Micah and Riley Wilson took the top two spots in the 110 hurdles, with Micah (17.55) narrowly edging Riley (17.59) at the tape. And sophomore Calvin Piescher led a C-I sweep of the top four positions in the pole vault by clearing 14-0 with the fewest misses; Micah Wilson was second (14-0), junior Lucas Frank was third (13-0), and sophomore Wesley Kennedy was fourth (12-0).

    Other winners for the Bluejackets included senior Noah McGovern in the 1,600 (4:54.66), sophomore Hunter Jacobson in the 3,200 (10:21.79), junior Jayden Kuhlman in the long jump (20-4) and the triple jump (42-7) and junior Josh Osei-Dankwah in the shot put (42-9.5).

    Cambridge-Isanti also claimed the top spot in the Big Lake Invitational held Thursday, April 25, outdistancing second-place Sartell 178-159.5.

    C-I’s best event was the pole vault, where the Bluejackets swept the top three spots. Sophomore Aubrey Wilson took the top spot by clearing 10-0 with fewer misses than junior teammate Abigail Kryzer, who also cleared 10-0. Seventh grader Annabelle O’Brien took third by clearing 8-0.

    Cambridge-Isanti also did well in the triple jump as junior Julia Sickler won with a best leap of 33-9.5, while senior Reese Wilking placed second with a jump of 32-10.

    Other individual winners for the Bluejackets were senior Hannah Bingham in the 100 hurdles (17.73), sophomore Makenna Sjoberg in the 1,600 (5:47.19), and junior Alice Steman in the high jump (5-0).

    The Bluejackets earned a 5-2 victory over Mississippi 8 rival Becker on Tuesday, April 23.

    C-I won three of the four singles matches, with Keagen Lowman (first singles), Phillip Yerigan (third singles) and Aiden Knudsvig (fourth singles) earning victories.

    The second doubles team of A.J. Nelson and Justin Sauze claimed a 6-1, 7-5 victory to clinch the win.

    Bombers baseball

    The Braham baseball team kicked off its week with a tough 7-0 loss to their Great River Conference rival Rush City on Tuesday, April 23, in what was the Bombers’ first shutout loss this season.

    The boys then hosted a doubleheader against Mille Lacs on Thursday, April 25, and came away with identical 10-9 wins in each contest.

    The win streak grew to three straight on Friday, April 26, as the Bombers routed Hinckley-Finlayson 15-5 at home.

    The team is now 7-2 on the season.

    The Braham softball team has also seen early season success, as the Bombers played host to Barnum on Monday, April 22, and won that contest with ease in a 10-0 final score.

    The very next day, the team had a hiccup, suffering its first loss of the year to Rush City in a 5-2 final.

    On Thursday, April 25, the Bombers hosted Mille Lacs and came away with the 7-5 win to post a record of 7-1 through eight games on the season.

    The Braham track and field team opened up its week on its own home turf, hosting the Braham Varsity Invite on Tuesday, April 23.

    Sophomore Tanner Doble took home a first-place finish in the boys 400-meter run in 56.05, while junior John Cacioppo earned first in the 110 hurdles with a personal record of 18.71.

    Senior Skyler Belsheim recorded first in the high jump finals on a mark of 5-8 before Doble came in first in the pole vault category by clearing 9-0.

    Senior Memphys Campbell rattled off a third-place finish in the long jump, while also taking third in the 400 run and second in the 200. Brycen Lotz, a senior, wound up in third in the shot put finals.

    On the girls side, eighth grader ZoeAnna Claseman won the 400-meter contest in 1:09.50, with junior Ava Johnson finishing first in the 800.

    Piper Anderson, another young but talented eighth grader, won the 3,200 meter finals with a time of 14:22.40.

    Sophomores Bridget Golly and Emily Davis placed second in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively, while eighth grader Emily Blomdahl took second in the 300 hurdles.

    The team then shifted its focus on its next meet at Pine City High School for the Pine City Chengwatana Invite on Thursday, April 25.

    For the boys, Belsheim claimed first in the high jump, while Doble finished third in the 400. On the girls side, Johnson finished fifth overall in the 800 meter event in 2:39.49.

    Bombers golf

    The Braham boys and girls golf team went to Grand National Golf Club for a Great River Conference invitational meet on Tuesday, April 16.

    As a team, the Braham girls claimed the top spot with a final score of 404. Senior Madison Davis (87) was a medalist, as Jenna Burmaster (103) took third place, with Delaney Johnson (106) in fourth and Elizabeth Fix (108) in fifth.

    For the boys, the team placed second with a 412 team score, behind Moose Lake/Willow River in first with a 372. Ethan Schroeder shot an 84 and earned first among all individuals.

    The girls then went to Rush City for a contest at Bulrush Golf Course on Tuesday, April 23, where the team came in first with a score of 420.

    Davis (86) was a medalist once again, as Burmaster (118) and Fix (109) took third and fourth, respectively.

    For the boys, Schroeder (90) would tie for third place, resulting in the boys placing third as a team with 462, behind Rush City’s 456.

    The Rush City baseball team is a perfect 4-0 on the campaign following its week of game action.

    The Tigers picked up a crucial 7-0 win over their Great River Conference rival Braham on Tuesday, April 23.

    Two days later Rush City defeated Ogilvie 2-1 on the road.

    The Rush City baseball team isn’t the only undefeated program this spring for the Tigers, as its softball team is currently 7-0 after its recent games in the previous week.

    On Tuesday, April 23, the Tigers beat Braham in a 5-2 contest before stomping Ogilvie on the road by a final score of 22-0, the team’s largest margin of victory on the season.

    The Rush City track and field team hit the ground running in its Pine City Chengwatana Invite on Thursday, April 25.

    On the boy’s side, senior Owen Dick took first in the pole vault with an 11-6 mark, as he also placed third in the high jump.

    Senior Braeden Rood earned third in the triple jump, and eighth grader Josh Bergfalk took sixth in the shot put finals.

    For the girls, eighth grader Kendra Heintz took second in the high jump by clearing 4-10, while taking third in the long jump and first in the triple jump.

    The Rush City golf team took a trip up to Hinckley for a Great River Conference Invitational meet at Grand National Golf Club on Tuesday, April 16.

    Ruth Widenstrom fired a 123 and took 11th place for the girls, while for the boys, Gabe Widenstrom (103) earned ninth place. Nate Umbreit (107) and Aiden Rustad (108) placed not too far behind Widenstrom.

    The Tigers then shifted gears toward another invitational meet in which they hosted at Bulrush Golf Course on Tuesday, April 23.

    For the girls, Ruth Widenstrom (115) earned sixth place, while Abrina Talberg (116) placed seventh.

    On the boys side, Gabe Widenstrom tied a 112 score with Eli Umbreit to lead the Tigers.
