MORGANTOWN, WV (WOWK) — Kanawha County Schools are working with the West Virginia University College of Applied Human Sciences to help fight the shortage of educators.

According to a release from the college, the school will be offering Kanawha County education professionals a “reduced per-credit tuition rate” to help them pursue a master’s degree in literacy education.

“This opportunity provides educators with valuable opportunities for professional growth and equips them with the tools to address the urgent literacy needs within our communities,” said Tom Williams, superintendent of Kanawha County Schools. “We know that this opportunity will not only benefit teachers but will also improve outcomes for thousands of students.”

As part of the partnership, Kanawha County Schools select a cohort of up to 25 people to receive the reduced tuition rate, giving many a chance to join WVU’s 30-credit hour online literacy education program and earn a master’s degree, as well as become certified reading specialists.
