NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Today marks two decades since same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts.

He feared coming out. Now this pastor wants to help Black churches become as welcoming as his own

The Goodridge v. Department of Public Health ruling was a historic moment and some of the plaintiffs in the case were from western Massachusetts. Heidi and Gina Nortonsmith from Northampton were one of seven couples who sued the state back in 2001.

An anniversary card for the Nortonsmiths is published in The Daily Hampshire Gazette . The message reads:

Celebrating 20 years of marriage equality in Massachusetts
    Happy Anniversary Gina and Heidi!
Thank you for leading the way.
Look at all the beauty you’ve made possible.
There’s work remaining to guarantee civil rights and justice for everyone in Massachusetts.
We’re with you now and in the days ahead.
As you taught us, love is love is love is love.
It’s as simple and as revolutionary as that.

Senator Comerford says that this celebration this year is a reminder to keep pushing forward, “So it’s one part celebration today and commemoration both of the hard work that brought us to this landmark case.”

Comerford says that it’s really important to take nothing for granted, adding that continued visibility, continued advocacy and days of celebration and recommitment are critical as we push forward.

Nationwide same-sex marriage was legalized in 2016.
