Weekend weather? Saturday is forecast to be 66 and somewhat rainy, while Sunday is predicted to be 72 and partly sunny. Catch it while you can, folks.

You know, as you (nearly) constant companion here, I feel like I read every story we offer to be sure to send you the best selection I can each day. But once in a while one will get by me. Recently, we published a story I missed. I’m offering it for you here, ICYMI too: Delaware's new Entertainment Industry Fund can help you make your next film.

Speaking of movies, here are two more stories related to movies that I did not miss the first time around, but think are worth sharing again:

It’s prom season in Delaware. Are you following along? We are planning to attend eight more proms this weekend, with more on the horizon. Enjoy!

    And now, more news …

Delaware's vanity plate application process ruled unconstitutional in 'FCANCER' plate suit

A federal court on Tuesday ruled that Delaware’s regulations governing the approval of vanity license plate applications is unconstitutional, reports Xeres Wilson.

“The ruling stems from the state’s revocation of a vanity plate issued to a cancer survivor that read ‘FCANCER’ and puts the state’s program for issuing new vanity plates on hold,’’ he reports. “The ruling found that state regulators unconstitutionally censored certain vanity plates based on a subjective viewpoint in a regulatory scheme that is overly broad and arbitrarily enforced.

“State transportation officials confirmed the hold in a letter to state legislators Wednesday and in a written statement.’’

    Fatal shooting database

37 people have been killed and 165 were wounded by gun violence in Delaware in the past 365 days.

In 2017, Delaware Online/The News Journal began to log every shooting that is reported in the state, as there was and continues to be no public database of these acts of violence. Since our tracking began, there have been more than 1,100 shootings.

The data comes from our reporting and police statements. The amount of information released for each victim varies, as does the information released on shooting incidents and how quickly it reaches the public. This database is meant to serve as a public tool for measuring violence throughout the state and trends occurring in our communities. Police are not meant to be the only source, though, and Delaware Online is committed to verifying information and getting out into the communities in which this violence occurs.

Police do not typically release the names of nonfatal shooting victims. The identities of homicide victims are usually made public, but there are a few incidents where this is not the case. Delaware Online is determined to tell the stories of these victims and what happened in their lives beyond this violence. If you’ve got feedback or would like to talk more about our criminal justice strategy, reach out to Brittany Horn, regional editor for crime and social justice, at bhorn@delawareonline.com. You will find our gun violence database here.
