YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Local and state leaders continue to examine property valuations in Mahoning County that led to higher property tax bills causing a lot of unhappy residents.

Mahoning County Commissioners held a talking session Thursday with two state lawmakers about the situation. Commissioners and the county auditor wanted to hear what was under consideration in Columbus to help landowners. They also offered ideas for Ohio State Representative Lauren McNally and Ohio Senator Al Cutrona to take back to Columbus for consideration, which could possibly provide relief.

“The next steps from here are making sure they have a list of all the different bills that are affecting taxes right now,” said McNally. “And so they can decide which ones they want to collaborate on, which ones they want to testify on, which ones I can help push the needle on as well.”

Much of the discussion centered on how unprecedented home sales at higher prices have driven property evaluations. The last time Mahoning County saw a drop in property evaluations was during the recession of 2008.
