Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is in critical condition after being shot multiple times in an assassination attempt on Wednesday (May 15). The incident occurred in the town of Handlova, following a government meeting. Fico, 59, was airlifted to Banska Bystrica Hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery.

The suspect, a 71-year-old former security guard, was detained at the scene. The attack is believed to be politically motivated, according to initial investigations by the country's interior minister. The minister appealed to the public, politicians, and journalists to stop spreading hate, suggesting that such sentiments may have contributed to the attack.

Fico, a known ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin , has been a controversial figure in Slovakian politics, often clashing with journalists and media outlets. His condition remains serious, with doctors fighting to save his life .

Slovakia, a member of NATO and the European Union has little history of political violence. However, this incident has shocked the nation and led to increased security measures for all government officials. The parliament session in Bratislava was suspended following the attack.

The incident has drawn international attention, with world leaders condemning the attack and expressing their support for Fico. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen , Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky , and Russian President Vladimir Putin have all issued statements condemning the violence and wishing Fico a swift recovery.
