    BOWERS BEACH — Ahoy, matey!

Pirates will be returning to Bowers Beach for Memorial Day weekend, and they are ready to bash.

The Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash, celebrating everything pirate, is set May 25-26.

Admission to the event is free. Certain activities will have fees, which will benefit the Bowers Beach Maritime Museum — open between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

The bash’s opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, with activities following until 5 p.m. They include cannon firings, demonstrations, food vendors and petting zoos. Sunday will see a similar schedule.

The Buccaneer Bash is one of the most significant events for the Bowers Beach community, bringing thousands of visitors, explained Judy Martin, a representative of the museum.

She said the organizers want to emphasize that the bash is for attendees of all ages.

“It is a very family-friendly event,” Ms. Martin said. “The faces of the children when they interact with the pirates is the most important. They love it, and so do we.”

The yearly tradition began in 2012. As Bowers Beach is a small, unfamiliar town, not far off Del. 1, the bash’s developers sought a creative way to bring more visitors to the area.

“This may sound corny, but this was our hook to get people to the town of Bowers and to the museum,” Ms. Martin said. “We are off the beaten path of the Bayshore Byway, (and) people do not know us. So, this was our way to get people into town.”
