GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Residents in Greenbrier County will have a new Sheriff in town.

Voters hit the polls on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024, to vote on a wide range of races, but one was for Sheriff. Current Sheriff Bruce Sloan could not run after serving two full terms.

No candidates ran on the Democratic ticket. On the Republican ticket, current Chief Deputy Bart Baker defeated Charles “Doug” Beard and Mark Alan Robinson.

Baker received 3,115 votes, Beard received 1,247 votes, and Robinson received 295 votes.

Baker made the following post on his Facebook page before the election:

“I would like to tell you a few of my beliefs to make for a great sheriff’s department, one that will serve its county well.
I believe that since the sheriff is elected by the people and the department is funded by the people that the department belongs to the people. That is why you see us at school games, festivals, and other community events. I have been a deputy for almost 22 years and I am still currently serving as chief deputy. I feel like I have always been approachable and reachable. I plan to continue that and work closely with the citizens to better serve the county. I believe that we need to do whatever it takes to protect our children. That is why I will keep prevention resource officers in our schools, and will work closely with the Board of Education to increase drug awareness in our schools. We must do what it takes to prevent these children from starting a life of drug addiction. I will also work closely with the Children’s Youth Advocacy Center, and Child Protective Services to prevent child crimes, and if there is a crime committed, work to ensure that the perpetrator is caught, convicted and imprisoned.
I will work with Adult Protective Services to ensure the safety of our seniors. There are many crimes committed against our seniors from financial exploitation, mental and physical abuse and neglect. We must also do what it takes to protect them.”
