    Federal law requires American Flags lowered to half-staff

    BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday.

    AAA warns to plan ahead for Memorial Day traffic

    The order was issued under federal law in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. It is one of two days in which federal law requires American flags be lowered to half-staff . The other is Memorial Day.

    Peace Officers Memorial Day is on May 15th each year. It is set aside to honor local, state and federal peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.

    Memorial Day, which honors U.S. military personnel who have died while serving, will be observed on May 27th.

    The order calls for all flags to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday.

    • The main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls.
    • Other state-owned or state-controlled buildings.
    • All state military installations.
