In the post-COVID world, gigs for musicians have been hard to come by.

But thanks to the Cultural Alliance of York, and the National Endowment for the Arts, York County musicians have an opportunity for a gig in their hometown, playing at a day-long, city-wide festival called Making Music Day.

Making Music Day is an international event that occurs in more than 1,000 cities around the world, bringing music into public places and venues. This is the third year that the cultural alliance is staging the event.

To do so, it needs musicians so the alliance is seeking musicians of all stripes - young and old, amateurs and pros, country to rock to classical - to fill the streets with music on June 21. The venues, all free, range from busking on the street to playing in parks and plazas or doing some porch picking.

The event also includes a kazoo parade and music all afternoon on Continental Square.

Musicians - and venues interested in hosting live music - can register online by visiting makemusicday.org/yorkcounty. The registration will ask musicians to list their availability for the day, their logistical needs and musical style. A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts helps cover the cost of paying the musicians. Other sponsors include the M&T Bank Foundation, WellSpan Health, York College, Members 1st, Harley Davidson and Explore York.

Any seeking more information can visit culturalyork.org or email the cultural alliance at yorkcounty@makemusicday.org or call 717-812-9255.
