OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) — Ohio County will name a new sheriff come November, and on Wednesday we found out whose names will be on the ballot.

Harry “Nelson” Croft Jr. has won the Republican nomination, earning 55 percent of the vote last night against Charlie Murphy.

Croft began his career with the county sheriff’s office in 1990 as a corrections officer, and is currently the manager of the Ohio County Animal Shelter.

If elected, he hopes to keep a growing national issue from causing any more local devastation.

“The opioid crisis is out of hand here and we’re not doing ourselves any favors. I can’t do anything about the border and I won’t get into that politics. But I can do something with it. Coming into Ohio County, I had a lot of experience in drug interdiction. I plan to get our crew back together and start trying to battle that again.”

Croft will face off in the general election against Democrat John Haglock, who serves as a prevention resource officer for Madison Elementary.
