WILLIAMSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Officials with Martin County say they’re working to expand broadband internet access in the area.

Officials say there are programs in place through two great grants and an RDOF grant. The county is waiting to hear back about funding from some CAB grants through the state.

Martin County Commissioner Davis Gurganus said they could receive around $20 million in funding for internet infrastructure, all at no cost to residents in the area. They’re continuing to apply for more grant funding. Officials say the Internet is needed to help agriculture, education, healthcare and business.

“We’re excited, it’s going to help us a lot. To think that we’re going to put a 30 to 35 million dollar investment in Martin County and it not cost the citizens of Martin County a dime. It’s just, we’re so excited,” said Gurganus.

County officials say work has already begun by putting broadband fiber in across the county.
