LAWRENCE COUNTY, Mo. (KOAM) - In the aftermath of a destructive tornado that tore through Lawrence County, residents are banding together to rebuild their shattered community.

The storm, which struck on Wednesday, May 8, left a trail of damage, stripping roofing from houses, uprooting trees, and rendering roads impassable.

Kevin Davis, a local resident, recounted the experience of witnessing the storm.

"Got in the house and the wind got really high, and we heard stuff hitting the house and in just a minute it was gone and came out and trees blown over everywhere," said Davis.

Despite the damage, Davis says he is not facing the cleanup efforts alone. Volunteers from the community came to lend a hand.

"It's amazing the people who volunteer to come and help us clean up, Fortunately, me and my neighbors, they've got farm tractors and I've got backhoes and, and, we've got the equipment to do most of it. Our soil and, and we work together. And that's what brings us out in that way is not real hard on anybody," said Davis.

Davis, along with his wife and grandson, emerged from the storm unscathed, the same can be said for all residents of the neighborhood.

"Yeah, it's a good feeling if you don't lose, you know, you or any of your family, you know, you got it made," Davis reflected.

One resident took cover along with their family as the tornado destroyed their barn.

Throughout the entire day the people living in Davis's neighborhood cleaned up the damage left behind by the storm. One resident telling KOAM's Anthony Saviello today is just the beginning of a long road.
