    UPDATE: One dead, one severely hurt in Monday Effingham Co. crash

    EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Effingham County Coroner and the Illinois State Police have shared new details regarding a three-car crash on US Route 40 on Monday, confirming that one person is dead and another is severely hurt.

    An investigation determined that a pick-up truck was traveling south on North 450th Street while a car was traveling east on US Route 40. Meanwhile, a van was traveling west in the same location. All three vehicles collided at the US 40 intersection.

    The pick-up truck driver, a 54-year-old Brownstown man, was unharmed in the accident. He was given a citation for disobeying a stop sign.

    Meanwhile, an Altamont man, 34, was driving the car and was severely hurt. Coroner Kim Rhodes said the man was airlifted to a Saint Louis hospital for treatment.

    The van driver did not survive after also being taken to a hospital. The Coroner identified the driver as 44-year-old Michelle Miller of Saint Elmo.

    The roadway was closed for nearly four hours while authorities investigated and first responders attended to the scene. ISP said this investigation is ongoing.

    It happened on US Route 40 near North 450th Street at 2:45 p.m. Traffic was rerouted to Dexter Road while officers responded to the scene.

    ISP officials said the crash investigation is still in its early stages and no further information is available at this time.
