Umatilla County Fire District 1 battles salvage pile fire Tuesday morning

UMATILLA CO., Ore. -- Umatilla County Fire District #1 said a pile of tires and salvage materials caught on fire Tuesday morning.

Fire crews responded to the call for help which was originally reported as a structure fire on Robnett Street just before 12 p.m.

Fire officials said when crews arrived, a pile of tires, scrap metal and plastic were completely on fire with a large cloud of smoke coming from the blaze.

According to fire officials, Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District assisted in putting out the flames with UCFD1. Fire agencies reported using a defensive approach.

No one was hurt.

Fire investigators say the fire started due to metal cutting.
