A dive into the local history archives unveiled a peculiar yet beloved tradition from the past: Donkey Baseball. Originating in the depths of the Great Depression, this unconventional take on America's favorite pastime brought laughter and entertainment to communities across Limestone County.
Dating back to as early as 1933 in Mexia, Donkey Baseball took the standard game of baseball and added a comical twist. In this version, players, excluding the pitcher and catcher, rode donkeys while fielding and rounding bases. The batter stationed their donkeys near the batter's box for a swift getaway to first base after a hit.
The game's popularity surged during the 1930s, offering affordable amusement during tough economic times. Community groups found it to be an effective fundraiser, further propelling its appeal. Notable matchups included the Lion's Club versus the Rotary Club in Mexia and the Groesbeck All-Stars (local businessmen) facing off against the Firemen in Groesbeck.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Donkey Baseball continued to captivate audiences in Limestone County. From charity games benefiting the Red Cross to spirited contests between local businesses and civic organizations, the tradition thrived.
By the 1960s, Donkey Baseball had become a staple of summertime entertainment in Thornton, Kosse, and Groesbeck. Families gathered to witness the hilarity unfold on the diamond, supporting various community causes along the way.
However, as the late 1970s approached, the popularity of Donkey Baseball waned, making room for a new craze: Donkey Basketball. While still a novelty, Donkey Basketball gained traction in the county, eventually surpassing its predecessor in popularity. Not until 1992 did Limestone County experience the quirky athleticism of Donkey Basketball. The high school held annual games from the early 2000s until 2019.
Despite its eventual decline, the legacy of Donkey Baseball lives on in the memories of those who experienced its charm. From its humble beginnings as a Depression-era diversion to its eventual transition to Donkey Basketball, this whimsical sport left an indelible mark on the community, reminding us of simpler times filled with laughter and camaraderie.
