BOSTON (WPRI) — Steward Health Care has until the end of June to sell off all 31 of its hospitals across seven states, including Massachusetts, but the company’s owner said that’s not feasible.

The Boston Globe reports the decision was made by a judge in Texas — where Steward is based.

Steward filed for bankruptcy on Monday but said its hospitals, medical centers, and doctor’s offices will stay open, and employees still have their jobs.

The group has been embattled for months after falling behind on paying bills and rent. As a result, they’ve come under fire by local and federal elected officials from Massachusetts who want to make sure all eight hospitals in the Bay State stay open.

BACKGROUND: Steward Health Care files for bankruptcy

In Bristol County, Steward owns Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and Morton Hospital in Taunton.

Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan said that if hospitals like Saint Anne’s in the city close, it not only affects patient care, but jobs and the community as a whole.

“Saint Anne’s, from everything I’ve heard, is the bellwether of the whole group,” he said. “They do very well down there, they’re a key part of the community and I’m and I’m pretty sure things are gonna continue as they are now.”

For the rapid sale process, Steward said it was part of a deal with a recent lender, but its attorney admitted that finding buyers for their hospitals by the end of June may be unfeasible.

However, the group has since received letters of interest from potential buyers.
