Huse pleads no contest to charges

ANTIGO — A local man was charged with over 30 felony counts for sexual assault against minors he taught roughly over two decades ago. Travis Huse pleaded no contest to 12 of those charges Tuesday morning at the Langlade County Courthouse.

Travis Huse is accused by six different women of touching them inappropriately from the late 90s to mid 2000s when he was their teacher at the Apostolic Worship Center in the Town of Evergreen, among other charges. He pleaded no contest to several counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and child enticement.

Huse’s no-contest plea was part of an agreement his attorney Kevin Musolf made with District Attorney Kelly Hays which resulted in the dismissal of many of his additional charges. Huse was able to use the plea to avoid a jury trial, which had appeared likely until Tuesday morning’s hearing.

“The agreement is that the state will cap my initial confinement recommendation at 25 years with no cap on the extended supervision,” Hays said. “The defense is free to argue. There will also be a request for a lifetime sex offender registry, no contact with the victims or their residences, and a psycho-sexual evaluation and follow-through with treatment recommendations.”

Huse’s plea comes just a week after a hearing last week during which he requested his bond be lowered to $80,000. The bond had previous been established at $1 million, but has since been revoked.

Court commissioner Brent DeBord denied the request, saying that the seriousness of the charges meant he did not consider Huse a reasonable risk if he were to be released into the community.

Separate charges of child enticement made against Huse in Fond du Lac County were consolidated into the Langlade County case Tuesday morning.

Huse’s sentencing hearing is set for June 25 at 9 a.m.
