LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) – Members of the Lafayette Parish School Board will vote on whether to support Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s litigation against the Biden administration’s changes to Title IX.

The school board meets on Wednesday, May 8. The lawsuit calls the consequences shocking and severe. School board member Jeremy Hidalgo and school board vice president Hannah Smith Mason will not speak for the entire school board. They give a personal stance on why they will sign the resolution Wednesday to show support for the lawsuit.

“How is it okay for someone who decides they want to identify differently to use a restroom or locker room with the opposite sex where the opposite sex is a visible difference, it’s visibly uncomfortable and the potential danger. We do not have to go into that we know the potential dangers in those types of cases,” Hidalgo said.

Mason says students are struggling with their identity. She believes LPSS educators and administrators have handled the issue with care and grace. “It’s forcing us to treat people in a certain way,” Mason added.

According to reports, schools in violation risk losing federal funding. LPSS confirms that $101,415,647 in federal funding was received by LPSS in Fiscal Year 2023.

“We were sent by way of attorney general these options such as far as support and resolutions. It was something that we were asked to bring before our board. I met with a few different board members, I called a few of them and they were in favor of putting this forward, Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. explained.

“I will take the direction from the board and see exactly where they want our district to stand. We will make sure that whatever avenue it is our team is going to move forward,” Touchet noted.

The new rules are to take effect August 1.
