    Volusia-Flagler High School Athlete of the Week poll: May 7

    The polls are open!

    It's time to vote for the Volusia-Flagler Athlete of the Week for the week of April 29-May 4. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.

    Last week, Spruce Creek baseball player Andrew Ezell took home the honors, claiming 28% of the votes.

    The News-Journal gathers nominees from scores and stats emailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across the area. Coaches can email nominees to cvinel@gannett.com.

    Voting will close at 5 p.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

    Baseball

    Tate Haag, New Smyrna Beach: The sophomore pitched 6⅔ shutout innings against Oviedo in the District 4-6A finals, which the Barracudas won 8-0. Haag also added six RBIs.

    Jayden Rivas, Father Lopez: The senior had three hits in four at-bats and collected three RBIs during the Green Wave's 12-2 victory over Interlachen in the district quarterfinals.

    Braden Russell, Matanzas: Russell was on base four times (three hits, one walk) and drove in a team-high four runs during a 15-5 win over Mainland in the district quarterfinals.

    Softball

    Taylor Ferrandino, Spruce Creek: The sophomore homered and set a new career high with five RBIs during the Hawks' 9-0 victory against University in the District 2-7A title game.

    Lillian Killian, Atlantic: The senior went 2-for-4 with a team-leading four RBIs in the Sharks' 12-2 rout of Seabreeze in the district semifinals.

    Sophia Weinrich, Deltona: The freshman knocked in three of the Wolves' five runs during their District 4-5A finals win over Matanzas.

    Tennis

    Giselle Adekunle, Spruce Creek: Adekunle advanced to the individual singles semifinals and doubles finals at the 4A state championships. The sophomore finished the season with a 16-5 record in No. 1 singles and 15-5 record in No. 1 doubles.
