SHELBURNE, Mass. (WWLP) – A fire inside a dairy barn at Gould Farm in Shelburne was quickly put out on Sunday night.

22News I-Team: Volunteer firefighters needed in western Massachusetts

According to a news release from Shelburne Fire Chief John Taylor, at around 7:18 p.m. crews were called to several 911 reports of flames visible in the dairy barn at the Gould Farm off Route 2 in Shelburne. Firefighters arrived within minutes since the station was within one mile of the farm.

Dispatchers called for assistance from 10 additional communities including Shelburne Falls, Colrain, Greenfield, Charlemont, Buckland, South Deerfield, Deerfield, Gill, Turners Falls, and Bernardston. However, it was canceled due to the fire being put out quickly by Shelburne firefighters.

Firefighters found a loader was on fire in the free stall portion of the barn and it was controlled within seven minutes. Chief Taylor reports that no animals were injured.

“We were all fortunate. The early recognition, early reporting, that we happened to have some firefighters at the station at that time for training, and that the farm is less than a mile from the fire station allowed us a chance to stop the fire before it became overwhelming,” reports Fire Chief John Taylor.

The Gould’s Maple Sugarhouse permanently closed in 2020 after 60 years.

Due to how barns are constructed and with equipment inside, it can be challenging to put out if the fire has spread within the building. The following fact sheet was shared on tips to prevent vehicle fires:
