    Severe weather arrives in Siouxland; Severe Warnings, Tornado Watches issued in parts of the area

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — (Updated 10:31 PM) — The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Tornado Warning for…Calhoun County in west central Iowa until 1115 PM CDT.

    At 1026 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Glidden, or 6 miles east of Carroll, moving northeast at 60 mph.

    Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

    * This dangerous storm will be near…Lidderdale, Lanesboro, and Hobbs County Park around 1030 PM CDT. Lohrville around 1040 PM CDT. Rinard around 1045 PM CDT. Somers and Knierim around 1050 PM CDT.

    Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Callender, Hobbs County Park, Moorland, Somers, Twin Lakes, Twin Lakes State Park, Knierim, Rockwell City Municipal Airport, Farnhamville, and Ralston.

    TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

    At 1013 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 4 miles east of Schaller to near Arcadia to near Gray, moving northeast at 50 mph.

    70 mph wind gusts and nickel size hail radar indicated with this storm

    Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

    Locations impacted include… Carroll, Jefferson, Sac City, Pocahontas, Rockwell City, Lake City, Manson, Manning, Coon Rapids, Laurens, Glidden, Lake View, Gowrie, Black Hawk Lake, North Twin Lake, South Twin Lake, Grand Junction, Wall Lake, Pomeroy, and Fonda.

    Remain alert for a possible tornado! Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

    A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 300 AM CDT for central, north central, northwestern and west central Iowa.

    At 944 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Manilla, or 8 miles southeast of Denison, moving northeast at 70 mph.

    Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

    This dangerous storm will be near…Vail around 950 PM CDT. Arcadia and Westside around 955 PM CDT. Breda around 1000 PM CDT.

    Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Buck Grove, Arcadia, Deloit, Breda, Vail, Westside, Manilla, Aspinwall, and Denison Municipal Airport.

    At 934 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 5 miles south of Charter Oak to Westphalia to near Walnut, moving north at 80 mph.

    HAZARD…70 mph wind gusts and nickel size hail.

    Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

    Locations impacted include…Carroll, Denison, Sac City, Lake City, Manning, Coon Rapids, Glidden, Lake View, Dunlap, Odebolt, Black Hawk Lake, Schleswig, Wall Lake, Manilla, Schaller, Early, Scranton, Dow City, Charter Oak, and Arcadia.

    At 842 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 3 miles east of Bennington to Omaha, moving northeast at 40 mph.

    60 mph wind gusts and nickel size hail possible. Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

    Locations impacted include…Missouri Valley, Logan, Woodbine, Dunlap, Crescent, Persia, Magnolia, Hitchcock Nature Center, Schaben Park, Wilson Island State Park, Willow Lake Recreation Area, and Historical Village Welcome Center. This includes Interstate 29 between mile markers 58 and 79.

    At 747 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Newton Hills State Park, or near Canton, moving northeast at 60 mph.

    Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

    This dangerous storm will be near…Canton, Larchwood, Inwood, and Lake Alvin State Recreation Area around 755 PM CDT. Rowena around 800 PM CDT. Valley Springs, Hills, and Lester around 805 PM CDT.

    At 5:55 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 5 miles northeast of St. Edward to 2 miles west of Shelby, moving northeast at 50 mph.

    HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

    Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
    Locations impacted include…Norfolk, Columbus, Schuyler, Madison, Humphrey, Clarkson, Bellwood, Leigh, Duncan, Platte Center, Monroe, Lindsay, Creston, Richland, Lakeview, Tarnov, Cornlea, College View Trailer Park, Camp Pawnee, and Circle H Trailer Park.

    (Updated 3:55 PM) — A Tornado Watch has been issued for: Knox, Antelope, Madison, Pierce, Stanton, Thurston, Cuming, Wayne Cedar, and Burt Counties in NE Nebraska and Monona & Harrison Counties in NW Iowa through 11 PM tonight.

    A few tornadoes and a couple intense tornadoes possible. Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 mph & scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter likely.

    A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

    (Updated 2:42 PM) – As a cold front approaches this evening, we’ll see showers and storms firing up along and near that frontal boundary. Scattered severe storms with large hail and damaging winds are possible. Especially through areas south of a line from just south of Canton through southwest Sioux County, southern Cherokee County, and southern Buena Vista county where the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has outlined a Slight (2/5) risk for severe weather.North of that a marginal risk is in place for the potential of isolated strong/severe storms from Canton to Orange City to Storm Lake and areas to the north.

    Primary threats main threats with any severe storms this afternoon/evening would be large hail of up to half dollar sized (1.25″ in diameter) and wind gusts of up to 60-70 mph. A few isolated tornadoes and localized flash flooding is also possible.

    Timing looks to be between 3-6 PM through far western areas of Siouxland. That line of storms and severe threat then shifts eastward through eastern portions of NE Nebraska and SE South Dakota between 5-7 PM. Then threat then shifts along and east of the I-29 corridor, including the Sioux City metro between 7-9 PM, with the Sioux City metro likely seeing the severe threat peak between 7-8 PM. Seeing that line of storms and severe threat race eastward into NW Iowa and into easternmost portions of the KCAU 9 viewing area between 8-10 PM with the threat of severe weather looking to wind down by 11 PM-12 AM as that line exits to the east into more central and eastern portions of Iowa.
