SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — Johnston County Schools officials said there was a hit-and-run collision involving one of their school buses on Friday afternoon with eight students injured.

At about 3:27 p.m., officials said that school bus 618 was involved in a crash near Webb Mill Road and Crocker Lane near the Four Oaks community.

Troopers confirm the driver of a white Nissan Altima failed to yield properly while turning left onto Webb Mill Road after getting into an argument at his ex-girlfriend’s house in the area.

They said he drove into the bus at a high rate of speed, causing it to run off the road to the right and hit a ditch, before flipping his own car on its side.

The driver ran off into a wooded area and has not yet been captured, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said he has been identified as 30-year-old Trevor Elijah Jordan Grice, of Smithfield.

A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured the incident unfolding and the suspect running off. You can watch the video above.

School district official said 14 students were on the bus at the time of the collision, along with the driver.

Eight students were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to highway patrol.

They said the investigation remains ongoing and charges are forthcoming.
