OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) — One item on the ballot in the May 14 primary is one that could help a local school district continue their work in educating future generations.

It is a renewal levy that would provide $24 million each year for the next 4 years to go towards a variety of resources and programs within Ohio County Schools.

If the levy were to pass it would not increase any tax rates for Ohio County Citizens.

The Superintendent of Ohio County Schools Dr. Kim Miller says passing the levy would allow them to continue offering a large variety of advanced placement and CTE courses for students looking to learn at a higher level.

She says the levy will also support the fine and performing arts as well as transportation to and from various extracurricular activities.

Dr. Miller says the levy will also help in increasing safety measures in the schools and ensuring their talented teachers remain in the district.

”Through this levy, we’re able to put one of those SROs, school resource officers, in each of our buildings. We are able to upgrade cameras in security areas as well as I said earlier, about retaining certified teachers in our classrooms, teaching our kids because we believe that our teachers are what make a difference with our students.”

Dr. Miller says they have been very fortunate to have a community that has supported them, and they hope to continue that by encouraging people to vote for the levy.

A reminder that early voting has begun and will run until May 11 with election day happening on May 14.
