PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Prince George’s County Animal Services and Adoption Facility (ASFAC) started accepting pet surrenders again on Wednesday, nearly one month after it paused intake.

ASFAC had stopped accepting any pets from owners who could no longer care for them starting on April 10 . The closure would last until April 30, a news release said. Officials pointed to a bacteria outbreak that caused the shelter to shut down in January as the cause.

On Wednesday, May 1, it opened its doors to pet surrenders again.

The shelter had previously offered a deal waiving all adoption fees — but as of Wednesday, that deal also drew to a close.

In a release Wednesday, ASFAC reminded residents that surrendering a pet at a shelter should be a “last resort” — before you do so, you should first try rehoming your pet with a family member or friend or reach out to an approved rescue organization to see if they can accept your pet.
