MARYLAND ( DC News Now ) — Maryland voters were able to begin casting their primary ballots early on Thursday. Among the elections this year are the presidential one and the race for one of Maryland’s U.S. Senate seats.

Maryland currently has more than four million registered voters. They have the ability to take advantage of in-person early voting at designated sites from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 2 through May 9.

“It’s really important to choose the people who are going to best represent us and make this country strong. Why did I come out today? Just to make sure that I got it done,” said longtime resident Edith Purdie.

“We’ve been preparing for months. We have very excellent, well-trained staff at every one of these centers that will answer any one of your questions and make people feel at ease about the process,” said Alexander Vincent Montgomery County Board of Elections.

Early voting is open to anyone interested, but once you vote early you cannot do a mail-in ballot or vote on Election Day for the presidential primaries on May 14.

The last day to request a mail-in ballot is May 7. If you requested a mail-in ballot, but choose to vote in person, you must complete a provisional ballot.

If you’re not registered and want to vote early, you can do so by arriving at an early voting site where you can register and cast your ballot on the same day.

“I would encourage people not to wait until the last few hours of the last day which is when the lines will be the longest,” said David Neimon, President for the Montgomery County Board of Elections.

You can find a list of early voting locations in your area on the Maryland Board of Elections website .
