EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – A video widely circulated on social media shows a Texas Army National Guard member firing projectiles behind razor wire along the Rio Grande as people off-camera yell, “¡Hay niños! ¡Hay niños!” (There are children!)

The guardsman first stands in front, then behind a black truck. Popping noises can be heard and dust rises a short distance from the soldier. More voices are heard in Spanish : “¡Grábalo! ¡Grábalo!” (Record him!) “¡Vean como nos tratan!” (See how they treat us!)

Additional pops go off, and more dust rises a few yards in front of the Guard member. The video ends with the soldier opening the door of the vehicle and putting the shooting device away.

The razor wire, Texas military and utility vehicles are in an area south of the U.S. border wall where migrants attempting to surrender to the Border Patrol often try to come across. Texas has placed the barriers right at the river to discourage illegal immigration into the state.

The newspaper Heraldo de Juarez on Wednesday published photos taken Tuesday afternoon showing activity on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande. One photo shows a man apparently cutting the razor wire, and another shows a man holding what appear to be wire cutters. A Border Report camera crew was told by migrants later that the men made several attempts to circumvent the wire. The pops were heard sometime after such attempts.

No further information could immediately be verified.
