SYRACUSE, NY — Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley will retire slain Lt. Michael Hoosock’s badge and call sign in a ceremony on Thursday. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 at the Palladium Memorial in front of the Justice Center at 555 S. State St., said Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. The memorial honors deputies and county first responders who have died this year as well as the three deputies who have died in the line of duty over the years.

A deputy reunited a lost girl who became separated from her mother on a Florida beach. Bodycam footage shared by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office shows Deputy Geoff Moore locating the girl while driving his vehicle on Indian Rocks Beach, located about 45 minutes west of Tampa. He was able to find the girl after her mother provided a description and a recent photo of her, according to PCSO.

A Florida police officer saved a boater who lost control of his watercraft earlier this month after he became unconscious. The rescue happened at around 12:30 p.m. May 3 when Sarasota Police Officer Michael Skinner, a member of the department's marine unit, received a call about a man in distress, according to an agency news release. When he reached the boat, which was slowly circling the inner coastal waterway close to Phillippi Creek, he saw that the man aboard was unconscious and lying face down on the deck.
