The San Bernardino County Code Enforcement team has been working for the past decade to tackle illegal Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) activities. These activities, often near flood control channels, endanger plant and wildlife habitats. The team organizes several annual OHV events with other agencies to enforce off-road and trespass laws.

On February 18, during the Presidents’ Day weekend, an off-road law enforcement operation took place. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the Colton Police Department, the San Bernardino Police Department, California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CA F&W), San Bernardino County Regional Parks and Riverside County Regional Parks were involved. The operation covered Lytle/Cajon Creek, Devils Canyon, Santa Ana River and nearby neighborhoods.

The Code Enforcement Division issued two misdemeanor citations and had four educational interactions about trespassing in restricted areas during the operation. Sheriff’s deputies issued two more citations for failure to yield and had five educational interactions. CA F&W officers and CHP officers issued three infraction and one misdemeanor citations respectively. Riverside County Regional Parks rangers gave out three warnings.

The operation ended without injuries or equipment damage, and no complaints were received from citizens. One person was arrested, and one off-highway vehicle was impounded by the CHP. A stolen vehicle was also recovered by Riverside County Regional Parks and Sheriff’s Auxiliary officers.

The combined efforts of these local agencies have helped protect neighborhoods and environmentally sensitive lands. The aim is to discourage future illegal OHV activities.
