As temperatures soar throughout the Bay Area, a number of counties are offering cooling centers for those that don't have access to air conditioning.

The heat advisory that went into effect Wednesday morning extends to most parts of the Bay Area with inland regions like Concord or Antioch expecting temperatures of up to 108 degrees. This sweltering heat poses a huge risk for seniors throughout the Bay Area who may not have air conditioning.

Furthermore, much of the information about county cooling centers are distributed online, making it tough for seniors to get the information needed to beat the heat.

The statewide June 15 reopening allowed for more cooling centers to open after a number were closed last year due to COVID-19 related health restrictions. Under the current guidelines for the shelters, everyone, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask while in the centers.

PG&E provides a helpful guide to cooling centers around the Bay Area by zip code. Similarly, Alameda County, Contra Costa County and Marin County offer cooling center information on their websites.

A more specific list of cooling centers in your area can be found at KPIX.

Additionally, the National Weather Service released helpful tips to avoid serious injury from the heat.

    1. Drink more water than usual
    2. Limit strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day
    3. Help the elderly and children stay cool
    4. Wear light-colored clothing and a hat
    5. Provide a cool area for your pets to stay

Stay cool and stay safe as the heat is expected to continue until at least Friday, with temperatures briefly cooling off over the weekend before again picking up early next week.
