(COLUMBUS, Ohio) On Thursday, officials from Ohio State University released the latest data on the number of staff and students who tested positive for the coronavirus, NBC reports.

Between Aug. 1 and Sept. 8, 27 employees tested positive while a total 1,814 students tested positive in the period spanning from Aug. 14 to Sept. 28, according to the university.

To date, OSU has reported 1,627 negative test results among staff members and 46,138 among students who were tested.

With positivity rates on the decline since students returned to campus, Ohio State President Dr. Kristina Johnson told Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine there was reason for "cautious optimism."

The fall term at OSU began on Aug. 24 with 20,000 students attending some form of face-to-face instruction, with 12,000 students living on campus and 8,000 commuting.

“We need our off campus students, faculty, staff and individuals in Columbus to be vigilant wearing masks because wearing the mask, staying socially vigilant, it really works,” Dr. Johnson said.
